Adding in features Google have had for years. Apple is really struggling here with years of underinvestment in this area

I have read so many articles in the past saying Siri could not get better as it was currently written and the only way to truly make it better would have been to rewrite it entirely? So is AI just an added layer to a crappy foundation, where it will only get better small ways? Will Siri still ultimately have to be recreated from the ground up eventually?

I think it has to be recreated. It started in the days where companies sharing voluminous information back and forth in order to provide actually useful results was a “cool” and “next gen” thing to do. When companies started using that data or even inferences to data all the way down to being able to utilize metadata to track people, it became a not cool thing. For something as simple as “what planes are flying overhead”, something you used to be able to get a result from Siri for, you have to provide your location to a database and that database can provide results based on your location. However, in order to provide that information for FREE, that database will likely want to store some information about you in exchange. As Apple doesn’t want to hand off that information to data providers anymore, the result is “here’s something I found on the web”.

Unless Apple has access to some “magic” that will make all the data providers want to share their content with Apple for nothing in return, Siri as a gateway to data accessed verbally just can’t work that way anymore.

Is anything rumored here something that Apple’s competitors aren’t already doing? Seems like WWDC will be about catching up to Microsoft and Google.

"Cross-Device Media Controls: Use Siri on one device to control playback on another, such as via the Apple Watch for the Apple TV. This feature is not expected to arrive until later in 2024."

How have they not done this YET?

I've always wondered how the devices figure out which one to control, but kinda figured this was the case - it's just not a feature.

At this point, I should be able to have full VOICE/SIRI control of at least Apple TV, to let me change channels and present options for buying and renting things in an exhaustive, comprehensive manner. I know some of that takes buy in from live TV apps for example, but JFC if there's a will there's a way, why wouldn't they want easier controls. Since I can't use voice to control the rest of Apple TV, I'm putting this one on Apple.

Cross Device Media Controls: I'm confused! Don't we already have this? Am I wrong? I feel like I can already do what the prompt in the article says will be new in IOS18. What am I missing?

iOS 18 will be released with iPhone16.
Yes but it will be announced at WWDC and the features described will only apply to current devices. as far as advanced features the only glimpse we’ll get will be whatever the m4 iPads get as exclusive If anything.

AI is really going to revolutionise technology.
Apple, based on these leaks, are taking baby steps.

I routinely use Siri on my iPhone, HomePod, Apple Watch, etc., to control playback on my Apple TV. This functionality has been available for years.

I do not understand what all this has to do with AI. Referring to Siri or dictation I find the whole thing primitive at best. Make it work, and call it whatever you want.

I hope they have some AI news ready for tomorrow as well. Need to keep the $AAPL pump going as long as possible.
