iOS 15.3 Fixes Issue With HomeKit Camera Thumbnails Failing to Refresh

Apple released iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 on Wednesday with several security fixes, and we have since learned that the software updates also resolve an issue with HomeKit camera thumbnails failing to refresh for some users in the Home app.

HomeKit Secure Video cameras added to the Home app each have a thumbnail that provides a still view of recent footage, and normally these thumbnails automatically refresh periodically. In recent weeks, however, some iPhone and iPad users had experienced an issue with the thumbnails failing to refresh and showing outdated footage.

As alerted to us by reader Collin A. Zimmerman and others, users who have updated to iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 are reporting that the bug has been fixed, with HomeKit camera thumbnails now behaving properly in the Home app.

iOS 15.3, iPadOS 15.3, and macOS 12.2 are relatively minor updates in terms of new features. Apple still has a few new features promised for early 2022, including Universal Control and the ability to add an ID to the Wallet app in participating U.S. states, and those features could potentially arrive with the next round of updates.

Interesting... I bought the Eufy Pan & Tilt to keep watch on our cats when we travel and the HomeKit integration has been less than thrilling, hopefully this addresses some of that.

That entire app is a mess that needs rewritten. It's like a junior dev wrote it. This is what happens though when people think that people who can pass leetcode interviews can do the work better than those of us who actually write software all day every day. Being able to answer tricky questions on the fly does not translate into architecting an app.

Upgraded all my :apple: devices last night and everything has been running very smooth. So many bugs have been fixed. This one is just one of many.

This still doesn't fix the issue with the Home app where streaming cameras are blurred when the Home app focus is placed into the background. You need to either keep the Home app in focus or move the camera stream to picture-in-picture, which limits you to 1/2 the width of a monitor and overlays on top of other content.
 
would be happy they would fix the "no response" error message for the Logitech Circle View 2. The cam is unusable and unsuitable as a security camera

I updated my iPhone yesterday while at work but the thumbnails were still stuck on images from late December. It wasn’t until I got home and updated my HomePod mini that the thumbnails started updating again.

But based on Apple Support Communities comments from earlier this year, I’m hesitant to declare this a permanent fix as it could be attributed simply to the home hub, typically responsible for pushing the thumbnails, was rebooted during update. Without Apple confirming the fix, it could still be a problem that resurfaces later as it did for users who previously rebooted HomeKit devices, removed and re-paired cameras, or even rebuilt their HomeKit setups from scratch, declared victory and then had to reply to their own comments that the problem had returned. It doesn’t seem Apple ever even acknowledged the problem in the first place which adds to my fear that it may just be an unintentional, temporary fix.

I got new Nanoleaf bulbs for Christmas - been unable to add them. Never had an issue with Nanoleaf before until I updated to 15.2.

Let us know if 15.3 resolves those issues - I want to hold off on updating for a bit yet.
 
I was having the old thumbnail, and 'now' issue for both my Logi Circle view cams since December, showing same error on my iPhone (any my partner's) as well as Mac. Working properly on both devices now after the updates. My Mac was updated and working but I noticed the error still on my iPhone - it was fixed after installing the update. So a combination of server end and device updates it seems.

I gave up on the Logitech Circle View it disconnected so much. A cheapo Eufy camera with a microSD card in it works much better than Logitech's expensive iCloud effort.
 
Applying updates now. Hopefully it fixes the Homekit bug where when I tap on a notification, it's supposed to take me to that particular clip to view. Instead it takes me nowhere but a black screen and I have to pick the recorded clip manually. It used to work (maybe before iOS 15?), but hasn't for a while.
